The family of a former student who died from blood clots after receiving an AstraZeneca Covid vaccine are hoping an inquest into his death will give them answers.

Jack Hurn, from Redditch, south of Birmingham, who was attending Coventry University, received his first dose of the vaccine on May 29 last year at a center in Dudley. reports Coventry Live.

Lawyers said the medical council at the time recommended that under-30s should be given an alternative to the drug AstraZeneca after it was found that younger people were at higher risk of developing blood clots.

However, according to CoventryLive, staff reassured the family it was safe. Jack developed a headache within days and died 11 days later at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where doctors reportedly described him with “catastrophic” blood clots in his brain.

Attorney Michael Portman-Hann said the family hoped an inquest to be held in Birmingham later this month would answer some of the questions they have about Jack’s death. He said: “Jack, a first-class graduate from Coventry University, had recently bought his first house with his partner Alex Jones, who was also getting her vaccine at the same time. She only found out after his death that he was planning to propose this summer.

“Jack’s parents, Tracey and Peter, his sister, Abby, Alex and their two families are completely devastated and are still trying to come to terms with what happened. Jack and Alex asked the vaccination clinic staff about the Pfizer alternative as they were aware of concerns about using Astra Zeneca for younger people.

“Alex and Jack were reassured by the center staff that the vaccine was safe and as there were no Pfizer doses available that day, they felt encouraged by the vaccine staff to proceed with the offering.”

An inquest into Jack’s death is scheduled to take place on May 23.
