The Academy announces a review of procedures for award campaigning

The academy has announced that it is conducting a review of “campaign” award procedures to ensure no guidelines have been violated in this year’s nominations.

The organization said it is committed to ensuring the competition is conducted in a “fair and ethical” manner and will determine if changes to future policies are needed.

It follows Tuesday’s nominations for the 95th Academy Awards, where British actress Andrea Riseborough received a surprise nomination in the Best Actress category.

Riseborough was nominated for her performance in the independent film To Leslie, in which she plays a single mother who turned to alcoholism after winning the lottery before changing her life when a motel owner offers her a job.

The film didn’t receive any recognition at the Golden Globes or the Critics’ Choice Awards, but has since been endorsed by some of Hollywood’s most prominent names.

Stars including Edward Norton, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett – who is also nominated for a Best Actress Oscar – have previously expressed their support for Riseborough and her performance.

A statement released by the Academy on Friday made no specific reference to Riseborough or To Leslie.

“It is the Academy’s goal to ensure that the awards competition is conducted in a fair and ethical manner, and we are committed to ensuring an inclusive awards process,” the statement said.

The review comes after the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards on Tuesday, where British actress Andrea Riseborough received a surprise nomination for Best Actress (Ian West/PA).

“We are conducting a review of campaign procedures surrounding this year’s nominees to ensure no policy violations have occurred and to inform us if policy changes may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communications.

“We have confidence in the integrity of our nomination and voting processes and support genuine grassroots campaigns for excellence.”

The 95th Academy Awards will be held on March 12th at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
