The actor who played Meredith Blake on ‘The Parent Trap’ is here for all your viral takes

Over two decades after The Parent Trap debuted, villainous character Meredith Clarke is getting a redemption arc thanks to TikTok.

And actress Elaine Hendrix, who played the almost-stepmother to twins Annie and Hallie (played by Lindsay Lohan) in the 1998 film, is there for it.

“TikTok users love Meredith Clarke, and I love her,” Hendrix said in a recent phone interview.

In the film, Meredith is the young, beautiful, and gold-digging fiancé of Nick Parker (Dennis Quaid), Annie and Hallie’s father. The twin sisters were separated at birth but find themselves years later at a summer camp. There, they devise a plan to reconcile their parents’ relationship…by sabotaging Meredith’s engagement to her father.

For those who grew up watching the film, Meredith wasn’t the character to champion. At one point, the twins take her and their father on a camping trip and play pranks on her all the time. Most people laugh along at the twins’ shenanigans rather than sympathize with the seemingly evil-going stepmother.

Now, those nostalgic to the film – and those watching it for the first time – have a new take: #justiceformeredithblake.

In honor of the film’s 24th anniversary, Hendrix took the opportunity to reassess her iconic character in a viral TikTok video that was posted on July 29 and has since attracted more than 1.6 million viewers.

In the video, Hendrix can be seen pouring a glass of Parker’s, the wine from the film, to the backdrop of Adele’s chart-topping single Easy on Me.

A caption begins: “He’s a 10…but he had twins whom he secretly separated at birth as he split from their mother, and didn’t tell you about it until the twins spotted each other at camp and swapped places trying to get her parents back together.”

The video goes on to describe the antics the twins dreamed up, including putting rocks in Meredith’s backpack and mixing sugar water with her mosquito repellent.

Hendrix said she was inspired by the latest TikTok trend, the He’s a 10 meme, which rates lovers on a scale of 1 to 10 based on their attractiveness before presenting a negative or positive trait that affects their score could affect.

“I don’t make videos that often, but I really enjoy making them and I’ve tried to take on different challenges or whatever’s trending and just try to put my own spin on it,” she said . “I did that to this one.”

Many commenters expressed their sympathy for Meredith, with one user writing, “I hope Meredith Blake married a handsome billionaire who treated her like royalty.”

Hendrix said she’s here for the fan love.

“I’m amazed. I’m honored. I’m thrilled,” said Hendrix. “There are several generations that have embraced the film and Meredith Blake, and it’s wonderful.”

She particularly appreciates the response from Gen-Zers who have seen the film years after its release.

“This film makes me feel like a part of them,” Hendrix said of the younger generation. “I appreciate that because I’m constantly searching and learning, and it keeps me young and beautiful, which isn’t a crime, you know.”

And while Hendrix acknowledged the criticism leveled at the twins’ parents for the split, Hendrix said she made the video as a joke and that viewers shouldn’t read too deeply into the character’s dynamic.

“In a Disney movie, there’s good and bad,” Hendrix explained. “Meredith is the bad guy in every way. She’s the obstacle, she’s the conflict in this film, and you need that.”

Villain or not, Hendrix said to fans, “I love you,” on behalf of Meredith. But to her haters? “I’ll send you to Switzerland!”
