The Bank of England introduces the first banknotes featuring King Charles

The bank said the King’s portrait will be the only change to existing designs on its plastic £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes.

The king’s image appears on the face of the banknotes as well as in the clear security window.

However, the bank confirmed that any existing Queen Elizabeth II plastic banknotes will still be accepted as legal tender and the public will continue to be able to use them normally.

It added that in line with the Royal Household’s instructions to keep the environmental and financial impact of the change to a minimum, it would only print new banknotes to replace the worn ones and increase the banknotes in circulation if necessary.

That means notes with Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III will be “in circulation together,” according to Threadneedle Street.
