Applying conditioner to the wrong area
While talking to the sun Speaking about her hair care tips, Martina said that one of the most common mistakes people make has to do with where they place their product.
It may seem obvious to some people, but you should never apply conditioner to your roots as it could make your hair “too greasy and flat”.
Instead, only apply the product from the middle to the ends, which are the oldest and therefore driest part of the hair. Leave on for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water to “close the cuticles”.
Using the wrong product
There’s a seemingly endless list of conditioners on the market, but choosing the right one for your hair type is detrimental to your hair’s health, says Martina.
Light conditioners are best for fine hair, but a deep conditioning mask can weigh down curls too much — despite being full of natural oils that may be important for other hair types.
Martina explained, “Look for a mix of silicones to smooth strands, amino acids to strengthen hair, provitamins or panthenol to moisturize, and mineral oil or petroleum jelly for protection, depending on what you need.”
Use the wrong amount
We all know that using conditioner is important to keep our hair healthy, but using too much can also be harmful. Martina says that too much conditioner “causes product build-up,” which in turn makes your hair look greasy.
The amount you need will depend on your hair type and length, but Martina recommends using “a dollop or two.”
Not waiting long enough
According to Martina, conditioner should never be rinsed off immediately.
The expert said the conditioner should be left on for at least a few minutes to allow it to “emulsify into the hair.”
Deep conditioning masks, on the other hand, should be left on for between 10 and 30 minutes, ideally with a shower cap to keep hair in place. This should leave your tresses looking “hydrated and shiny.”
leave residue
Of course, when you wash out your conditioner, one of the most important things to look out for is whether you are rinsing your hair properly.
Leaving some conditioner in your hair can result in “greasy and dirty” strands, so make sure you remove any products properly when rinsing.
