LADIES Day at the Races is a highly anticipated event, an opportunity for women to dress up and soak up the sun.
Brighton Racecourse held its annual Ladies Day yesterday, August 4th, and the sunny, warm weather was perfect for glamorous race-goers.
Brighton hosts the event on the first Thursday of its Festival of Racing each year and has said an average of 1,500 bottles of Prosecco are consumed along with 1,000 bowls of fresh strawberries.
Augustfest is said to be “the perfect reason to get a group of your loved ones and loved ones together and spend a day outside”.
These images show that many women have done just that, laughing and enjoying the sun with big smiles on their faces.
Although there is no formal dress code for the event, most attendees opted for floral dresses and heels, accompanied by fascinators and hats.
One of the women soaking up the sun was Caroline Murphy, from Epsom in Surrey, dressed in all 1940s style, wearing a dress she had bought at a museum near Birmingham, accompanied by a parasol.
She said: “Oh, it was wonderful, the sun is shining, it’s lovely.
“A lot of people liked my outfit, the dress is probably 80 years old now and I got a lot of compliments.
“It’s so busy here, it’s beautiful. I love Brighton Racecourse.”
To encourage edgy fashion, the racecourse also hosted style awards for thousands of racegoers to showcase their best shoes and impress the judges.
The judges used photos taken of the flower wall and the designated “spotter” in the crowd to decide who won the award.
This year’s finalists for Best Dressed Lady were Gill, Letitia and Maria.
Gill kept winning and took home the top prize of £500.
Ladies Day has been around since the 19th century when women got reduced prices for race tickets.
The term dates back to 1823, when an anonymous poet described Thursday at Royal Ascot as “Ladies’ Day…when the women look divinely sweet like angels”.
Across the UK, many racecourses make Ladies Day synonymous with other fashion competitions such as best dressed lady, best hat and best dressed couple.
