DRIVERS are shocked after finding out the best time to fill up – and it will save them big bucks.

As the cost of living continues to rise, millions of Britons are looking to save money on fuel.

And savings expert @ndainternet showed on TikTok that filling up in the middle of the day is more expensive, especially on a hot day.

He said in a TikTok video: “You should fill up in the morning as the amount of diesel varies depending on the outside temperature.

“In hot weather, fuel expands and takes up more space in the tank.

“So a liter of fuel is less than a liter if you top up in a high-temperature tank.

“So you’re basically throwing money at the pump.”

He advises filling up the tank early in the morning or late in the evening.

Speaking of Daily expressAndrew Marshall, Marketing and Partnership Manager at carmoney, said: “Regarding the expanding fuel spike, this one holds water as both petrol and diesel would expand in hot weather and take up more space in the tank.

“If you top up at lower temperatures you will get the most capacity from your tank, although the difference would be small.”

But he said the best way to save on fuel is to “keep an eye on local station prices and go where prices are lowest.”

It’s also important to know that maintaining the correct tire pressure increases tire life and reduces fuel consumption – which also saves money.

And removing unnecessary weight from your vehicle also maximizes fuel economy.

Check the trunk for forgotten bags and stow the roof rack or bike rack when not in use.

Another tip is to park the car in a garage during the colder months.

This increases the temperature of your engine overnight – meaning you can reduce the time it takes to warm up before driving the next day.
