The Bionic boot allows the wearer to walk faster and lighter

Scientists have developed an exoskeleton boot that allows people to walk 9 percent faster with 17 percent less effort.

The robotic shoes are equipped with a motor that works with the calf muscles to give the wearer an extra boost with each step, researchers at Stanford University in the US said.

The team said their work was published in the journal Naturecould help people with mobility impairments.

Patrick Slade, who worked on the exoskeleton as a graduate student at Stanford Biomechatronics Laboratory and is the study’s first author, said: “There are a number of clinical populations that we hope to be able to help, including older adults, people with muscle weakness of a variety of.” Medical conditions like stroke and specific injury recovery for things like Achilles tendon strain.

“We are beginning to conduct studies to examine the benefits of using our device in older adults.

“In general, older adults have muscle wasting, walk slower, and require more effort to walk at the same pace as younger people, so we’re excited about the opportunity to reverse this trend.”

Engineers used machine learning technology to create their untethered exoskeleton boot, which can be customized to the needs of the wearer. Sensors were built into the device to monitor movement.

Tests showed that using the device resulted in a 9 percent increase in walking speed with 17 percent less energy expenditure per distance compared to walking in regular shoes.

Researchers plan to develop variations of the device that can be used to improve balance and relieve joint pain.
