Cigarettes are everywhere in “Peaky Blinders,” and the protagonist, Thomas “Tommy” Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, ignites them as if it were air he needed to breathe. It’s hard to find a scene where Murphy doesn’t smoke, but he just dropped this particular habit of Tommy. “Everybody’s been smoking all day [back then] and it just became a Tommy thing,” Cillian explained to Independence habits of his character.
It became a joke between Murphy and series creator Steve Knight, with Knight often joking that he was only allotted five a day for shoots. The tobacco that we see on the screen is actually herbal, made up entirely of roses. Curiosity did better than him and, around the time he was promoting the third season of “Peaky Blinders,” Murphy revealed that he asked supporters to give him the numbers:” I asked supporters to count me smoking as a hobby and they thought it was 3,000.”
The switch to herbal cigarettes has become a popular staple in television and movies, especially for shows set in the past. The show “Mad Men” immediately comes to mind, not only because of the smoking, but also recalling how they promote their use herbal tobacco at that time. It’s a healthier workaround for the cast, and with more people turning to herbs, it’s easier for the crew to find props.
