A woman’s body was found under a pile of clothes on a balcony of a Cleveland apartment by a cleaner after she went missing in July last year.

Audreona Barnes, 18, was last seen on July 30, 2021, speaking to her family over the phone for the last time that day before she disappeared.

Now her boyfriend Bennie Washington, 39, has been charged with aggravated murder and grossly assaulting a corpse following her fatal shooting, as reported by Cleveland.com.

Barnes’ body was found last Thursday on the balcony of Washington’s former home on Warner Road in Cleveland’s Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood, from where he was evicted last March.

A cleaner reportedly called police after finding Ms Barnes’ body on a balcony under a pile of clothes and blankets.

Investigators said it appeared the body was deliberately taken outside to speed up decomposition.

Court documents reportedly said Ms Barnes had been shot in the head and investigators found bullet casings near the body as well as a bullet hole in an apartment wall.

It was also documented that members of the public had spoken of Washington’s “unexpected public behavior” prior to his arrest.

He reportedly fled police and fled through someone else’s home before being arrested the next day, last Sunday.

Police had previously said Ms Barnes was last seen after being dropped off at her boyfriend’s house by army recruiters, but it was unclear if she had gone to the flat.

That was the last time she was seen and Ms Barnes’ mum Akua Avegnon said Washington received a text message from her the same day asking to be picked up from a petrol station – but she claimed it was ” doesn’t seem like it came from her”.

The family also said Ms Barnes’ social media accounts were deactivated as a result and her phone was turned off.

Warrensville Heights detective Gregory Curry later said that there is no gas station on Warner Road, where she appears to have been asked to be picked up by her boyfriend.

Ms Barnes’ family had launched an appeal for the public to get help finding her, with volunteers searching the same neighborhood where she disappeared last November.

“It’s very different from her … I mean, she’s grown up, she comes and goes as she pleases, we regularly talk, ‘Mom, here I am, here I go,'” her mother said.
