Voice of the People honors the incredible courage of Ukrainians as they awaken to the terrible devastation of the country caused by Putin’s diabolical attacks
In Ukraine this morning, people are waking up to a broken country.
Usually, they will do what we will. Take the dog for a walk, go get papers, visit family, go get a drink. Prepare for the week.
All has disappeared. In the blink of an eye, an autocratic land robber and their entire way of life were destroyed.
Instead, ordinary people – teachers, politicians, doctors, store clerks – are holding guns to defend their homes against invaders.
Their courage is amazing.
Of course, many people have fled, it is bravery, to leave your home – in many cases your family – for danger.
But many people stayed.
They want to look these invaders in the eye and tell them, “What you are doing is wrong. We will not roll over. We will fight.”
And they are fighting. Not just to protect their home and the dignity of the country they live in. They are fighting for ideals that are cherished by the whole world.

The idea that just because a neighbor has more tanks, guns, planes or boats, just because they’re bigger, richer, or older, they can’t take what’s yours.
They are fighting to show us all the strength, courage and patriotism that does not lie in the bunker under the mountain. They are standing together, defending the human right to live in safety and peace.
And the world is watching. Because what happens in Ukraine can happen anywhere. That has been made clear now. The Baltic countries are worried, Finland, Sweden are already threatened.
There are many other countries that are also living in the shadow of power-hungry neighbors.
That’s why the world needs to do more than just observe.
Sanctions are a start. Moving troops to vulnerable areas of the continent was a first step. Opening the border to refugees is a start. Aid and weapons are a start.
Next comes the hard work.
A new cold war with an old rival. It will deepen the cost of living crisis, hurt relationships with other countries, shake the entire balance of the world.
But we must stand with Ukraine and we must stand together.
And when it gets tough – and it will – remember those who fight for everything and everyone they love. Those men and women were thousands of miles away – but closer than ever.
