It used to be a Liberal mantra to “get the government out of our bedrooms”. Feminists in Ireland had a different version – “Take your rosaries off my ovaries” – but the basic message was the same. People wanted to be left alone with their sex lives. Some elements of our lives are private and should remain so. Too much of our sex life has been regulated, including who you’ve slept with and how to do so safely.

However, a new generation of progressives have called for the return of government to areas we once thought had nothing to do with it.
