“Esporte Clube Bahia reports that a bomb exploded inside the team bus upon arrival at Fonte Nova and the athletes were injured,” the statement read.
“The most worrying case is goalkeeper Danilo Fernandes, who was hit in the face by shrapnel and has been taken to the hospital. The group discussed whether there was a match or not.”
A statement later confirmed the shooter would spend the night in hospital getting stitches, including a cut near his eye.
Bahia added: “Danilo Fernandes is fine, but will spend the night in the hospital.
“The goalkeeper has suffered multiple injuries to his face, neck and lower extremities, which requires stitches and will be monitored for further examination and evaluation by an ophthalmologist, as there is a cut near his eye.”
While it is remarkable that no one was more seriously injured by the bomb, what is even more astonishing is the fact that Bahia decided to complete the match after experiencing the pain.
Confirming his team will play their match, coach Guto Ferreira said: “The squad, with seriousness and professionalism, will take to the field to honor the Bahia shirt.”
