THE Callisto Protocol is a new survival horror game coming out this December from Dead Space director Glen Schofield.
When creating horror games, hundreds of hours are invested in research to find out how the human body reacts in various horrifying situations.
What does it look like when someone breaks their ankle while trying to escape? How would it sound if a zombie rips the heart out of a human’s chest?
These are questions that must be answered before diving into the world of horror entertainment.
However, in an interview with GLHF, Schofield explains how he was reluctant to research actual human anatomy when it came to researching his game.
He says: “Study anatomy. We didn’t spend much time looking at corpses. That’s not cool.
“Out of respect, we spent a lot of time looking at prosthetics that can be found all over the internet.
“Sometimes you don’t realize it’s not real. So we had them do this horrible research. And then we will never deal with it.”
He went on to explain that much of the blood in The Callisto Protocol comes from the monsters and not the humans.
This means that it would be impossible for him to create fully realistic animations in this case.
He continued, “We’re going to have a monster that has no human anatomy. So I mean, we had to invent a lot of it.
“We do concept art. We have a large concept art team. They start on day one and still work at the end.”
While survival horror is the focus of his upcoming game, he also expressed that he wants to work on something more action-oriented.
He even says he has a few ideas he’d like to propose for a sequel next month, before the game even releases.
Of Callisto, Schofield said, “I didn’t want to get too action-packed, but I didn’t want to leave the action people behind.
“I wish fans would embrace the action horror game a little more, and I’d actually like to do that with the sequel.
“I think that would be damn cool. You have to think about that.
“In September I’m going to Krafton to sell a few ideas. So I have to be ready.”
Whether the bodies look realistic or not, we’ll have to wait until December to find out.
