Sheffield United and Luton Town have booked their spots in the Championship play-offs on the last day of the regular season.

The duo started the day fifth and sixth – and two home wins ensured it stayed there. They will now join Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town in the play-offs, with just one of those sides joining Fulham and Bournemouth in next season’s Premier League.

The Blades went into tonight’s home game against champions Fulham knowing that only a win would guarantee their entry into the lottery at the end of the season. And despite meeting a Cottagers side after a 7-0 loss to Luton that sealed the title, Paul Heckingbottom’s side were rampant.

They were 3-0 up within 25 minutes thanks to goals from Morgan Gibbs-White, Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge to shock the visitors. Enda Stevens made it 4-0 after the restart in a memorable day for the Blades as they ended the regular season on a high.

Luton also secured a place in the top six thanks to a gift in the 1-0 home win over Reading. Royals stopper Orjan Nyland inexplicably dropped the ball in his area, unaware that Harry Cornick was loitering. The Luton man happily rounded the keeper and tapped in just before the break. And it stayed that way as Nathan Jones’ men finished sixth.

Middlesbrough’s chances of progressing into the top six rested on an away win at Preston North End. But Chris Wilder’s side just didn’t show up and a tough 4-1 defeat by the Lilywhites – including a brace from Emil Riis – dashed any faint hopes.

Millwall also started the day with an outside chance to reach the play-offs, but Gary Rowett’s side lost 1-0 at newly promoted Bournemouth, with Kieffer Moore’s late shot being the only goal of the game.

Huddersfield’s 2-0 win over Bristol City secured them third place at the expense of Forest.

Forest thought they had caught a late winner in Hull with Brennan Johnson’s added-time penalty. But Keane Lewis-Potter had the final say to level the score at 1-1 and ensure Steve Cooper’s side finished fourth and now meet Sheffield United in two legs.

In the other tie, Huddersfield meets Luton. The championship playoffs begin on Friday.
