The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust is in “positive” talks with potential buyers

The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust has confirmed “positive” talks with the club’s potential new owners as it continues to push for greater fan involvement in the Blues’ future.

The CST previously laid out a set of expectations for the new owners, including a “gold share” that would essentially give fans the right to veto certain key decisions.

Following Roman Abramovich’s decision to put the Blues up for sale following the Russian invasion of Ukraine on March 2, the club’s offer period has now expired.

The Russian-Israeli billionaire was sanctioned by Downing Street last week, with the government claiming to have proven the 55-year-old’s links to Vladimir Putin.

In a statement, the CST said: “The CST has played an important role during these difficult weeks.

“By working with MPs and Government we have ensured that the voice of Chelsea fans is heard at the table when decisions have been made.

“We can also confirm that we have had positive discussions with some interested parties. We presented them with detailed plans on how our proposals could be implemented.

“We very much welcome these proactive discussions and look forward to continuing them in the coming weeks.”

Businessman Nick Candy has promised to campaign for a “golden share” for fans if his bid is successful, while former British Airways chairman Sir Martin Broughton has also pledged to increase fan involvement.

I’ve already sat down with the CST and all the ideas that Tracey Crouch put forward are on the table, including an investment opportunity if desiredMr. Martin Broughton

Broughton told BBC Radio Four’s Today programme: “We are totally on board with the Tracey Crouch report for more fan engagement.

“I’ve already sat down with the CST and all the ideas that Tracey Crouch put forward are on the table, including – if desired – an investment opportunity.

“You can come and take full advantage of ownership and veto rights for free, and we are open to rebates and investment. We’d be interested (sell shares at a discount) if that’s what the fans want.”
