‘The closest we come to Sam’ – Mayo syndicate of retirees celebrates €1m lottery win

A syndicate of 47 Co Mayo pensioners painted the city red and green as they arrived at the National Lottery headquarters in Dublin today to collect their €1million prize.

he Young At Heart group from Parke, just outside Castlebar, won the €1 million Daily Million prize in early October and were still feeling excited when they picked up their check this afternoon.

The syndicate was founded in 2015 and couldn’t believe their luck when they got €1 million richer last month.

Arriving at the National Lottery offices, Breda O’Boyle, 82, danced and sang as she declared: “That’s the closest we can get to Sam. It’s not a bad substitute.”

Breda said she found out about the big win on an early-morning stroll across the moor and admitted he was “draping in a sweat”.

“I was on my walk on the moor and got a call that I was at least €20,000 richer. I thought it was a joke. I said nothing and walked around the bog – I was definitely sweating, I can tell you that. It was confirmed the next day and we’ve been dancing ever since.”

She said she has no real plans for the money but did receive some messages from her kids joking, “I’m your favorite son” and “I’ll bring in the lawn for you every day”.

A cruise, a trip to Greenland and a vacation of a lifetime are just a few of the things syndicate members hope to do with their winnings. Meanwhile, Teresa Flanagan, 86, said she’s getting “a new pair of boots and a watch.”

Michael Cosgrave, spokesman for the syndicate, described the utter shock he felt upon learning the group had won.

“We are so happy to share this award together rather than one individual winning it alone. It means so much more to us as a group to experience that joy together,” he said.

The winning ticket was sold at Turlough Stores in Turlough on 3 October.

Syndicate member Anne Kelly revealed how the group previously partied at one of their group meetings in Parke.

“We had a meeting on the Thursday after our win and we celebrated with champagne, food and music. It was a real party and the atmosphere was just electric. The whole community is very happy for us,” she said.
