The widening health inequalities and negative impact of the cost-of-living crisis are “escalating” with each passing week, says Belfast-based Dr. Alan Stout, Chairman of the British Medical Association Northern Ireland GP Committee.
He said it was having a “huge impact” on the mental and physical health of people across all socioeconomic groups, but particularly in the most disadvantaged communities.
“Mental health is the big umbrella term and we also refer to it as social stress. This is the reality, especially in disadvantaged areas where there is low income and little hope.”
Patients present with mood swings, anxiety, and depression, as well as symptoms such as headaches, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, and palpitations.

“We see it escalating and escalating, especially on the cost of living.
“The pressure and stress that people face with mortgages, bills and groceries.
“People are caught in spirals and crises, and that has repercussions.”

He spoke of the “terrible negative mood” in all communities and the importance of politics working for the people.
