The cost of living on energy bills increases by thousands in weeks
They come off Fixed Price Offers will soon see their subscription fees increase.
The current average base price for electricity in the UK is more than 80% higher than at the same time last year, according to the charity Center for Sustainable Energy.
It is expected to rise again in April when the new energy price ceiling comes into effect.
Standard charges are a daily charge levied on gas and electricity bills to cover the cost of running the energy network.
Regardless of whether you use gas or electricity, you will be charged a basic fee.
With a fixed-price contract, you pay the same basic price throughout the year.
However, those who are now phasing out the fixed-income business will soon see their base price rise sharply.
There’s not much you can do to avoid the spike if you’re on a fixed price contract, although you can shop around to see if you can find a more competitive rate for your energy bills.
Martin Lewis has previously offered advice on how customers who pay by direct debit can save up to £200 on their energy bills.
First, he recommended that all viewers submit meter readings regularly. This helps energy suppliers bill you the correct amount for the energy you use and prevents them from estimating your bill which can lead to overcharging.
If you think you’re being overcharged for regular meter readings, you can use an online direct debit calculator. This calculates how much you should be billed based on your usage.
Martin Lewis said the results from the calculator had been “very powerful” in getting energy suppliers to lower their direct debit charges and recommended calling them with your results.
If you still think you’re paying too much, you can request that you switch to a variable debit where you only pay for exactly what you used.
However, this means that if you don’t have the “smoothing effect” of paying more and using less energy in the winter, your bills will be much higher in the winter.
The money-saving expert also warned that paying on receipt of the monthly statement could be up to 10 percent more expensive than regular payment by direct debit.
