The crew of Gravity had to get creative to make the sound work in space

Despite winning so many Oscar wins and nominations during the 2014 Academy Awards, somehow, “Gravity” is my take. still doesn’t get the credit it deserves for the epic technical aspects (not to mention the brilliant script, also written by Cuarón with his son, Jonás) that the creative team has succeeded in. Thankfully, re-recording mixer Skip Lievsay also gives his insights in that video interview, explaining how the director has spearheaded the efforts to create some of the beauty of an sonic landscape in dangerous beauty of space.

Crediting Cuarón for his powerful vision of exactly how he wanted to bring this aspect to life, Lievsay had this to say about the process:

“He has a firm grip on what he thinks sound should be. He understands the science himself; because they designed the movie the way he designed the movie, he completely immersed in suits and space shuttles, and what you can and can’t do, and how you’re going to get from here to there if you just have a tether or whatever science goes on. doors and everything – it’s all in the form of transducer recordings, which capture vibrations, not ordinary airborne sounds, and really the whole layer of sound effects is those recordings. .”

In the end, knowing what you want from the finished product as an artist is only half the battle. The other half involves an army of talented crew members who can figure out (or even craft) a way to accomplish what the director wants. The final product speaks for itself, even outside the calibrated setting of a movie theater, and proves that “Gravity” has some serious staying power.
