The Destiny 2 Guardian Games are making a comeback, and with them comes the annual surge in class loyalty, healthy competition, and cheeky banter. Announced in the This Week in Bungie blog post on April 28th, the limited-time event will drop on The Tower for all Destiny 2 players beginning May 3rd.
For those who don’t know, the Guardian Games is an annual event where players are divided into classes. During the period it is active, certain events will provide tokens that can be donated at the tower to add to a community-wide leaderboard. This allows players to earn a selection of exclusive items, sure, but it also contributes to the overall class score. At the end of the event, a class will be crowned champion and a statue will be placed in the tower for the rest of the year.
As you can imagine, the news has caused class tribalism to pop up on community hubs like the official Reddit. As it stands now, many are dizzy in anticipation of the rivalries that will take root in the community. However, some have been shocked to pay more attention to the current class popularity given Titans have fallen off in the past 12 months. Thankfully, there are boosts for lesser represented factions during the Guardian Games, making it fun no matter what type of player you are.
In fact, this seems to be an ongoing theme for this year’s event. Guardian Games events have new systems that allow you to earn rewards regardless of playstyle. This is covered in the official blog post on ‘Strike scoring accounting for play time for Guardian Games playlists only. On top of that, we have Strike Medals, which are meant to reward players for pulling off some pretty impressive feats like taking out a bunch of enemies with a nifty little combat device like Shatter.”
“This should also help players who feel like they’re being compared to others just rushing through strikes. Why rush when you can rack up some extra points by going nuts and showing the bad guys what’s up? “
Last but not least, this year we’re getting a selection of super cool outfits for each class, with each set having its own unique color based on the class. The undisputed winner in this category has to be Warlocks as they get a Tron-like cosmetic with a sleek black and yellow aesthetic.
