The DJI Mini 3 Pro has been thoroughly leaked in an unboxing video and retail post

On Thursday, DJI tweeted a teaser for a May 10 announcement saying it would reveal “a plot twist.” It seems likely that the company is planning to launch a new drone – especially given that a YouTube video showing how to unbox a DJI Mini 3 Pro and its controller was uploaded on the same day as the teaser from DJI (via droneDJ).

In their video, YouTuber DM Productions says they received unboxing footage from someone who received the unannounced DJI Mini 3 Pro drone early. The video gives us a good look at the drone itself, with its array of obstacle avoidance sensors and controls.

As DM Productions points out, the controller is similar to DJI’s current RC Pro, with some buttons and ports removed. The Mini 3 Pro’s controller also doesn’t have antennas sticking out from the top, and I’d bet good money the screen isn’t as bright or sharp as that of the $1,100 RC Pro.

Having a controller with a built-in screen is nothing to scoff at. The one that came with the Mini 2 uses your phone.

At this point, we have learned many details about this drone. A leak last month showed it would still weigh under 250 grams (meaning Americans don’t have to legally register it) and that it would add forward-facing collision avoidance sensors. That leak also included information about the drone’s battery (which appears to be around 2,453mAh) and camera, which we later got more details about thanks to two retailers who put them up for sale early on.

Corresponding droneDJ, the Mini 3 Pro will cost around $1,000, and its camera system will be a massive improvement over the Mini 2. (Though you’d hope it would, since the Mini 2 currently sells for $449.) The 3 Pro is rumored to have a larger sensor, a lens with a larger aperture that lets in more light, and has the ability to record at 4K 60 fps instead of the 30 fps that the Mini 2 achieves. Oh, and that should be possible in HDR so hopefully you don’t have to choose between sky that’s too bright or ground that’s too dark.

As for the “twist in the plot” that DJI promises, both the retail leaks and the unboxing video mention that you can easily switch between capturing portrait and landscape video with the drone. That’s an interesting feature for those creating content for phones — and it’s a little humorous that DJI’s next drone will be able to shoot vertical content when a Snapchat-made drone can’t.

It seems unlikely there is much to be leaked about this drone, especially in the short time before it is officially unveiled. The DJI website says the announcement is scheduled for the 10th at 9am ET.
