The doctor reveals he found a penny inside a patient during a colonoscopy

A doctor has shared some of the most unusual finds he’s come across in his career – including a penny stuck in a patient’s butt.

Benjamin Schmidt, best known to TikTok followers as Doc Schmidt, claimed he performed a colonoscopy on a patient with a history of colon cancer, a procedure that’s fairly routine in his industry.

Fortunately, after verifying that the cancer had not returned, Doc Schmidt found that the patient’s passage was healthy. But then he saw a flash of silver.

Doc Schmidt, 31, noticed the coin in the patient’s appendix, the part of the colon furthest from the anus, and has no idea how it ended up there.

The paramedic from St. Louis, Missouri, USA recently shared his story on TikTok, with the video garnering more than 1.2 million views and 69,000 likes.

Doc Schmidt said: “I did a typical colonoscopy – which I do four to five times a day – and when I got to the appendix I found a dime. I had never seen anything like it and the patient had no memory of swallowing.”

He added: “This video was very popular, I think many videos of unusual medical cases and findings are well received due to people’s natural curiosity.

“Videos about objects found in patients’ rectums certainly cause a great shock, but I think this video did particularly well for its level of mystery.

“That this wasn’t found in the rectum, but in a part of the colon that wasn’t easy to get to, so we really don’t know how the dime got there!”

The video soon garnered hundreds of comments, with one user joking, “He swallowed a penny a few years ago and you know… inflation.”

Another person suggested, “Maybe he swallowed a quarter and took change,” while a third shuddered, “I swallowed a nickel as a kid and never worried about it…UNTIL NOW.”

A fourth person, who also appears to work in the medical field, recalls, “I found a garden stone with ‘Carpe Diem’ engraved on it.”
