The “Doomsday Clock” has been reset to only 90 seconds until Armageddon

Mankind was never closer to the risk of annihilation today when nuclear scientists turned back the “doomsday clock” to just 90 seconds to midnight.

he clock, created by the US-based Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists to illustrate how close mankind has come to the end of the world, advanced its “time” to 90 seconds to midnight.

This is 10 seconds closer than it has been in the past three years as threats of nuclear war, climate change and disease have been exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Midnight on the clock signals the end of the world, or Armageddon, and scientists fear the threat of annihilation is growing as the war in Ukraine enters its second year next month.

The clock was developed in 1947 by a group of nuclear scientists, including Albert Einstein, who had worked on the Manhattan Project to develop the world’s first nuclear weapons during World War II.

It then started ticking at seven minutes to midnight, but reset to 17 minutes to midnight – the most distant “doomsday” yet in 1991 after the Cold War officially ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union and those of the United States US signed treaties with Soviet Union to reduce their nuclear arsenals.

The latest watch was unveiled in Washington by members of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists and former Irish President Mary Robinson.

The clock is now closer to midnight than ever before, Rachel Bronson, the Bulletin’s president and CEO, said at a news conference.

“Russia’s thinly veiled threats to use nuclear weapons are a reminder to the world that escalation of the conflict by accident, design or miscalculation poses a terrible risk.

She added that the Chicago-based nonprofit announced the annual turning back of the clock in Russian and Ukrainian for the first time to attract attention there.

The clock will be reset based on the most up-to-date information on catastrophic risks to the planet and humanity by the organization’s board of scientists and experts in nuclear technology and climate.

The clock had been set at 100 seconds to midnight since 2020, which was already closer to midnight than ever before.

The board said the war in Ukraine has also increased the risk that biological weapons could be used if the conflict continues.

“The ongoing stream of disinformation about bioweapons laboratories in Ukraine raises concerns that Russia itself is considering using such weapons,” Ms Bronson said.

Sivan Kartha, a member of the Bulletin Board and a scientist at the Stockholm Environment Institute, said war-driven natural gas prices have also prompted companies to explore natural gas sources outside Russia and switch power plants to coal as an alternative energy source.

“Global carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels, after recovering from the Covid economic downturn to an all-time high in 2021, continue to rise in 2022, hitting another record high… As emissions continue to rise, extreme weather events continue, and were even more clearly due to climate change,” said Kartha, pointing to the devastating floods in Pakistan in 2022 as an example.
