A driver was killed after his car crashed into a wall and burst into flames in County Laois, Ireland. Police are now appealing to the public for information, although the cause is unknown

A motorist has died in County Laois, Ireland, on Friday afternoon after a car crashed into a wall and caught fire.

Police said the driver was the only person in the car and further details about the accident are not yet known.

The fatal collision occurred around 2.45pm on Athy Road, Stradbally.

The body of the deceased was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise, where a post-mortem will take place.

The R428 Athy Road was closed for a period of time Friday night as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conducted a technical investigation of the scene.

Gardaí is asking witnesses to the fatal collision to come forward.

A police spokesman said: “All road users who have camera footage, including dashcams, and were out and about on Athy Road or the surrounding areas between 2.30pm and 3.15pm are asked to make such footage available to Gardai.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 867 4100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”

It was earlier said: “Gardaí was at the scene of a fatal road traffic accident involving a single vehicle which occurred at around 2.45pm this afternoon, Friday 24 June 2022 on Athy Road, Stradbally, Co Laois.

“A car collided with a wall on Athy Road and then caught fire.

“The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle (details currently unknown) was fatally injured in the collision.”

They added: “The body of the deceased has been taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise where a post-mortem will take place.”

The road was later reopened after the police forensic team examined the crime scene.

“Athy Road (R428) was closed tonight while Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carried out a technical investigation of the crime scene. The road has since been reopened,” police said.
