The Elden Ring map doesn’t look that big if you line it up to the end
From all impressions elden ring everyone was making when they got their hands on it, one in particular has stuck through the weeks and months since its release. This is of course due to how deceptively massive his world is. Some of this is intentional, as the game constantly “lies” about the true size of its map, expanding it every time you think you’re reaching the edge.
But Elden Ring also doesn’t tell you about the few subterranean areas or the many caves and mines scattered around its mountains. If you just want to get to the end of the game in the most efficient way (that doesn’t involve fast running), you’ll end up playing a different game than everyone has been playing so far.
It’s now common knowledge that you only need two Greater Runes before you can make it to the final area of the game, which then takes you down a path to a specific hidden zone for an item needed to defeat the final one Bosses is needed.
To help you imagine how little of the game’s world you actually have to have To explore this, Reddit user Spicy_Slice posted a shot of the Elden Ring map with only the critical path highlighted. There’s a fairly slender arc running through the map, but it’s only when you see how much of the full map is technically “optional” that things are put into perspective.
It’s worth noting that Elden Ring offers multiple paths to its main areas. For example, the route highlighted above ignores the task of getting both halves of the medallion to operate the elevator that takes you to Altus Plateau, and uses a side path instead.
While certain thresholds must be crossed by all players in the same way, the majority of players will actually have different experiences in order to reach much of this world.
I quit Elden Ring a long time ago, and it made me want to revisit games I wanted to give another chance. But if you’re still trying in the Lands Between, our comprehensive Elden Ring guide is here for you should you need any help.
