The Engagement Story of Rita Ora and Taika Waititi

Taika Waititi and Rita Ora are finally opening up about their private proposal and wedding a year after they tied the knot.

The Oscar-winning director and the “Anywhere” singer spoke to us Fashion about their wedding in an editorial published on Friday, in which Waititi revealed how their engagement actually came about.

“She proposed to me,” Waititi explained. “And I immediately said ‘yes’.”

Vogue said the marriage proposal came about while vacationing in Palm Springs in 2022, just a year after the two began dating.

Ora and Waititi wed just weeks later, on August 4th, in front of an incredibly small group.

“There were about eight people there — just close friends and family and parents on Zoom,” Waititi said.

“It wasn’t in London or France like everyone was saying,” the director continued. “It was in LA with a small group of friends.”

The two have largely kept the details of their marriage proposal and ceremony a secret so far, and Ora said they found it “quite entertaining for us to see the different stories that people have come up with and keep them to ourselves.”

“I love that we can now share what really happened — and on our one-year anniversary, no less!” she said.

Ora shared some details about the wedding and the marriage proposal Glamor UK in May, although she did not make it clear that she was the one who actually proposed.

“Honestly, there was no real kneeling. It was more like, ‘I want to marry you. Let’s just do it,'” she said.

The “Your Song” artist said the entire wedding was planned in “two to three days.”

Waititi has two daughters, Te Kāinga o te Hinekāhu and Matewa Kiritapu, with his ex-wife, film producer Chelsea Winstanley. Ora said Waititi’s daughters were in town when the wedding was coming up and she “really wanted them to be there.”

“Either that’s how it was or we had to wait forever. I didn’t want to go there without my stepkids,” Ora told Glamor UK. “So we just figured it out and did it. And it was perfect.”
