The European Union and India are establishing a Trade and Technology Council to deepen cooperation between the two partners, it said in a joint press release Monday.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is on a two-day visit to New Delhi and met India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The announcement comes as Britain seeks to boost arms exports to India amid the war in Ukraine.
“Both sides agreed that rapid changes in the geopolitical environment highlight the need for joint deep strategic engagement,” the joint press statement said. According to the press release, this is intended to create a framework for political and technical cooperation.
The EU executive is expected to start formal negotiations with India on free trade, investment and geographical indication agreements in June.
