A “disemboweled” mum showed up at Manchester Airport looking forward to a long-awaited family trip to Turkey – only to find her EasyJet flight had been cancelled.
Joanna Lovell was looking forward to the holiday with her two children, partner Jack and his son, her parents, sister, brother-in-law and their two children.
The family first booked the holiday in 2020 for 2021 but was canceled due to Covid-19.
After a two-year delay, the group arrived at Manchester Airport on Thursday morning for their long-awaited journey. Yorkshire Live Reports.
They managed to check in, went through security, enjoyed some pre-Christmas food and drink before arriving at the gate, only to find their flight had been cancelled.
EasyJet is said to have canceled or postponed hundreds of flights due to an IT problem.
A statement today from EasyJet said: “Unfortunately we are currently experiencing issues with IT systems, meaning flights departing between 1pm and 3pm UK time today may be affected.
“Our team of IT specialists is working to restore the systems as soon as possible.”
The trouble falls on the back of Manchester Airport, which has been struggling with staff shortages for several weeks, leaving travelers frustrated and worried as some even miss their flights.
Joanna, founder of Lovell Films and former reporter for the Hull Daily Mail, said she will fly from Manchester to Antalya at 1.35pm.
Seven hours later, she told Yorkshire Live she was still waiting to hear if she could embark on her much-anticipated journey.
She said: “Our bags went on the plane, as we were queuing to board we saw them jump off, then the whole crew came off so we all speculated.
“Then we received an email from EasyJet saying it was cancelled. We have been told that 400 EasyJet flights across the country have been canceled between 1pm and 3pm.
“That wasn’t long after we found out, with people trying to rebook flights and trying to figure out what was going on. There was no staff in sight, no help and no one to speak to.
“I understand these things are happening, but families are stranded.
“We were told for two hours we couldn’t move, so we sat in no man’s land at the gate, just stranded.”
The mother-of-two, who said the family was “gutted” when she found out about the cancellation, said she tried to speak to EasyJet staff but they too seemed unaware of what happened to the canceled flight.
She added: “It was just the lack of explanation, we found that out via email when queuing on board. No announcement.
“One staff member I gave a collar to said he had never known anything like this, he had no information, but suddenly said they had a message that said ‘don’t fly’.”
Passengers have been spotted at Manchester Airport crammed outside the gates, with many perched on their bags for lack of space.
Police were also seen at the airport trying to control the “absolute chaos,” Joanna added.
“Because of the security check, we had to be escorted through the arrivals hall and back through passport control to re-enter the country we hadn’t left. The police had to be called, as you can imagine,” she said.
“We are absolutely disappointed! The holiday was canceled by a year due to Covid, then we finally got through security, were able to board straight and then it was cancelled!
“I’ve never been to an airport, through security, had everything checked, and then walked out of the arrivals hall the same day.”
