A double murderer was given ribeye steak and shrimp as his last meal before being executed by lethal injection in Missouri.

Carman Deck, 56, received dinner at 1 p.m. before his execution at Bonne Terre state prison at 6 p.m. local time.

His execution was controversial after his death sentence for the 1996 murders of elderly couple James and Zelma Long was overturned three times.

He carried out the brutal murders when he broke into their rural home in De Soto, eastern Missouri, in July 1996.

Deck received a lethal injection at 18:00 and was pronounced dead at 18:10.

Before the execution, he received a final meal at 1 p.m. in the state penitentiary.

He had ribeye steak, shrimp, asparagus, salad with Italian dressing, cottage cheese and V-8 juice, Missouri Department of Justice director Karen Pojmann reported Oxygen. com.

Deck is the fifth person to be executed in the United States this year and his fate was sealed after Missouri Gov. Mike Parson refused to offer him clemency.

“Mr. Deck received due process and three separate juries of his peers recommended death sentences for the brutal murders he committed,” Mr. Parson said in a statement.

“The State of Missouri will execute Mr. Deck’s sentence in accordance with the court’s order and provide justice.”

The others executed in the US this year are Donald Anthony Grant and Gilbert Ray Postelle in Oklahoma, Matthew Reeves in Alabama and Carl Wayne Byntio in Texas.

The 1998 death sentence was overturned by the Missouri Superior Court when it was found that Deck’s attorney had made serious errors during the trial.

Then, in 2005, a second death sentence was overturned when it was decided he was biased because the jury had seen him in shackles.

Finally, a third decision to execute Deck in 2008 was overturned after a witness failed to appear during the sentencing hearing.

But a three-judge panel of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated the death penalty in October 2020, ruling Deck said he should have raised his concerns in the state rather than the federal court.
