The explosion in the car was a “gas canister” as the man remains hospitalized, police confirm

An explosion in south Belfast that left one person hospitalized was caused by a gas canister and is not linked to crime, police have confirmed.

In a statement today, the PSNI confirmed the gas canister was in a vehicle at the scene of the nighttime security alert in the Newtown Park area.

A man was taken to the hospital where he is currently being treated for facial injuries in the blast.

Police and army engineering officers were in the cordoned off area to investigate the crime scene and a number of homes had to be evacuated.

Ballymaconaghy Road, Manse Road and Cairnshill Road were also closed while police investigated, but all roads reopened this morning.

Inspector McCourt said: “We would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding at this time.”
