The facts on Brighton’s new man Pervis Estupiñán

ALBION’s new signing Pervis Estupiñán has been tapped to support the club’s attack but needs to improve his defensive skills.

The Ecuadorian joins Seagulls from La Liga side Villarreal and The Argus have reached out to European football expert Alex Barker (@EuroExpert_) to understand the player better.

He told The Argus: “In his day he can be a menacing crosser of the ball but we are yet to see the best of him, particularly defensively.

“Since I’ve watched him he’s been very keen on rushing into tackles and being quite an aggressive defender which could mean he’s adapting well to Premier League physicality but he might need a little work on that.

“It is worth noting that he has improved positionally over the last season. However, offensively he should be successful as, according to FBREF’s statistics website, no one in the Villarreal squad executed more crosses into the box last season in La Liga than the South American.”

“He gets good power throwing it behind defense but as Villarreal got a bit more ball-dominant last season he showed he can still take it back for teammates rather than smashing him in. Brighton fans can also expect energy and pace of work.

“I think he will bring something special from his Champions League experiences with the Yellow Submarine.

“He started with wins against Juventus and Bayern Munich and the only players with knockout experience in the Champions League in the Brighton squad are Joël Veltman, Adam Lallana and Danny Wellbeck.”

The Ecuadorian has featured ten times in the Champions League and 91 times in La Liga.

Barker has compared Estupiñán to Tottenham Hotspur’s Ryan Sessegnon as he is a player who is “excited” to go forward and can help a team’s attack.

He said: “Perhaps a comparison can be made to someone like Ryan Sessegnon as both ‘defenders’ are more skilled and enthusiastic in attack than defending and both feel like players who aren’t damaging enough to play as forwards.

“It’s not necessarily an insult, as we’ve seen recently the Spurs player can have an impact on the left, just as Estupiñán’s attack does something different for Villarreal with his crosses and crosses. Both players are good with the ball.” her feet too.

While Estupiñán will fill the gap left by Marc Cucurella on the left side of Albion’s defence, he is expected to offer a similar attacking focus but may struggle to provide the same defensive assistance as the current Chelsea player.

Barker said, “I see a lot of similarities between cucurella and estupiñán. Both were players who felt like wingers and full-backs in La Liga, with neither attracting much attention from Champions League regulars. Both are also sharp passers.

“Where I think the players will differ on defence, I just don’t see Estupiñán being able to move to left centre-back like Cucurella did for Brighton last season.”

Estupiñán will join compatriots Moises Caicedo and Jeremy Sarmiento in Albion, which could ease his transition to English football.

Barker believes this could be “vital” for the defender as it will help bring harmony to the squad.

He said: “I think that will be crucial. When players move to a new club, not only the team changes, but also the dynamics of the dressing room and the harmony of the team.

“Having Caicedo and Sarmiento there will help Estupiñán to settle in but also help them to have another compatriot at the club.

“It’s still a big challenge to switch leagues and countries and La Liga is a much slower and more tenacious league than the Premier League.

“However, given Brighton’s recent track record, I’m confident that Estupiñán will find a foothold fairly quickly.”
