The family’s missing turtle was found in the attic after 30 years – and it’s still alive

A turtle who went missing in 1982 was found 30 years later – alive and well in the family attic.

Manuela was owned by Nathalye De Almedia’s mother in the early 1980s. Daily Star reports.

Nathalye had heard of the mysterious creature but was told it disappeared when his mother was eight.

The family thought the pet went missing while they were doing electrical work on the house.

But three decades later, after the woman’s husband died, the family went to the house to sort through his belongings.

And when they searched the attic, they were shocked by what they found in a box with an old wooden speaker inside.

“We were shocked!” Almeida told The Dodo in 2013.

“My mother came crying because she couldn’t believe it – they found Manuela!”

Against all odds, the animal had found a way to survive being locked in a storage box for more than three decades.

It was believed that she had survived by eating termite larvae also found in the room.

Almost 10 years later, however, a story update reveals that Manuela is still alive — but now called Manuela, since a routine veterinary exam earlier that year revealed the brave turtle is actually male.

A tortoise can live up to 255 years and survive about three years without food and water.

The world’s oldest tortoise is named Jonathan – a Seychelles giant tortoise currently living on the South Atlantic island of St Helena.

He is 180 years old and came to the island in 1882 as a gift to Sir William Grey-Wilson who would later become the island’s governor.

However, his veterinarian Joe Hollins said in March: “To be honest I suspect he is older but we may never know.”
