The Final Fantasy 14 director says the story of the next expansion is already underway

Naoki Yoshida, Director of Final Fantasy 14, has confirmed that the story for the next expansion is already being advanced.

Last year, Final Fantasy 14 finally completed the story it had been working toward since its 2013 relaunch with the Endwalker expansion. The story has been evolving for almost a full decade, with four expansions and many patches that slowly tell the great adventure set in Hydaelyn. But according to an interview with NME, Yoshida has already started planning for 7.0, the next expansion.

“The plot for the main scenario in the Patch 6.X series is already complete and we have decided to complete it. Scripting work for several patches and detailed plot work are currently underway. In fact, on my end, I’m already deciding what I want for 7.0,” Yoshida said in an interview.

It’s rare for an MMO to actually fully complete the story it’s trying to tell, which World of Warcraft has a problem with, but Yoshida and co. did indeed do the unthinkable with Final Fantasy 14. The story doesn’t quite end there as he notes that more 6.X patches are on the way, but it’s interesting that Yoshida is already thinking about what’s up for the next arc in the world of Final Fantasy 14 do is.

Yoshida not only touched on the game’s narrative future, but also on the Island Sanctuary, a new unique area that will allow fans to interact in a more relaxed way than in the main game. “Everything is progressing well, but since this is content that plays very differently than things we’ve implemented before, now that patch 6.1 has been released, I want to take a closer look by posting it in the live letter from the Producers announce patch 6.2.”

Yoshida also recently touched on the development of Final Fantasy 16which appears to be in “the final stages of development”. The Final Fantasy 14 director says the story of the next expansion is already underway
