The football club of the city of Steyning commemorates the player killed in a truck accident

A FOOTBALL club paid tribute to a bright, funny and intelligent teenager who died in a truck accident.

Finley Shephard died in a collision between a blue Ford Fiesta and a lorry at Steyning Road, Shoreham on Sunday 3 July.

The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a heartfelt tribute, Steyning Town Community Football Club said they were “deeply devastated” by the death of a “member of our football family”.

Finley, who joined the club aged six, had played regularly at youth level before becoming a “scoring centre-forward who made a huge impact on and off the pitch,” a club spokesman said.

“It is fitting that he scored two superb goals in his last game for the club in the U18 Cup final a year ago, when Steyning U18s won their SCFL Cup final at Shoreham FC.

“He has spent his final year at University in London and is starting his next adventure while playing for University.”

The rep described Finley as “passionate, talented and wholeheartedly on the pitch”.

“Finley was bright, funny and intelligent. He was also a talented all-round athlete with a large circle of friends.

“He has three sisters who all play at the club and we’re sure his younger brother will be next.

“His family is a big part of the community and there is a widespread sense of loss and disbelief.

“We will miss you Finley and as a club we will make sure we support your family and friends at this tragic time. Thanks for all you’ve given us. You were loved very much and we will always remember you.”
