Klopp gives injury update on Alexander-Arnold and Salah

Jürgen Klopp will probably wave his Liverpool going into the international break with a smile full of gnashing of teeth. Ironically, however, his greatest fear haunted him before his side had even completed their club duties.

The Reds seemed to be preparing for an important 2-0 away win arsenal, Trent Alexander Arnold began to move very uncomfortably. Klopp pulled his right-back off the field, probably crossing his fingers in the process England Ace hobbled down the tunnel.

Unfortunately, the news wasn’t good for Klopp, was it Gareth Southgateas the The defensive maestro is reportedly set to remain on the sidelines for a long time. “Trent is out with a hamstring so he can’t belong in England either,” Klopp said in his pre-match press conference Liverpool‘S FA Cup Clash with Nottingham Forest. “Not good news, we’ll see how long that lasts.”

The obvious worry and concern in Klopp’s voice suggests it could be damaging for the 23-year-old. But while Alexander-Arnold, Klopp and Southgate await the timeline of his impending injury scares, an opportunity may well have arisen for forgotten Liverpool and England man Joe Gomez.

Considering Gomez has started just six games in all competitions this season, it’s easy to forget that he was Virgil van Dijk’s main central defensive partner in their side First League and Champions League title triumphs. He also appeared to be Southgate’s first-choice defender, playing alongside Harry Maguire, as the England boss approached the 24-year-old en route to the Nations League semi-finals.

Can Joe Gomez reclaim his place in Liverpool and England’s starting XI? Let us know Remarks

Gomez could be used well by Klopp in a very tense part of the season

Unfortunately, Gomez was one of three Liverpool defenders to suffer season-ending injuries last season. Joel Matip’s outstanding form and the arrival of Ibrahima Konate have also seen him plummet down the pecking order.

But Alexander-Arnold’s injury could see Klopp relying on the former Charlton defender again, albeit as a makeshift right-back. Gomez gained Klopp’s trust from full-back before being promoted to Van Dijk’s side. While Gomez’s roaming forward threat doesn’t come close to matching Alexander-Arnold’s sensational passing range, he provides some extra defensive solidity on Liverpool’s right.

With no Alexander-Arnold bombing forward, Mohamed Salah will not have as many defensive duties while freeing Jordan Henderson from his usual responsibility of covering the space left by Alexander-Arnold. “I don’t know any player who plays like Trent so it’s difficult to find a one-for-one replacement,” added Klopp.

“We have Milly [Milner], Joe, theoretically we can change the system too, stuff like that. So we have a few options.” England’s array of quality right-backs will mean Gomez is not on the cards to fill the Alexander Arnold-shaped hole in Southgate’s plans.

But some good performances at right-back for Liverpool could see Klopp and Southgate give Gomez more opportunities from central defence. Gomez has all the attributes of a modern centre-back save for a clean injury record.

Gomez has managed to bounce back from heartbreak on numerous occasions in his career. And if, despite Alexander-Arnold’s injury, he takes all the chances that come his way, he could reclaim his place in Liverpool and England in time for the World Cup.
