A former music teacher who died after being found at her home with serious injuries had been the victim of a severe attack hours earlier.
Ouise Muckell, 54, was spotted at the property in Cois Deel, Rathkeale around 8.30pm on Tuesday evening.
She was taken to University Hospital Limerick, where she died on Wednesday.
A major inquest, led by Gardaí of Henry Street, is now underway to investigate the circumstances of her death.
At this point it is believed she was attacked by someone she knows at a house on Windmill Street in Limerick City on Tuesday.
Ms Muckell was then taken back to the property in Rathkeale, some 30km away, before being discovered seriously injured later in the evening.
State pathologist Dr. Margaret Bolster has performed an autopsy which confirms the victim was the victim of an assault.
However, the cause of death has not yet been determined and sources said further investigations are needed to advance the investigation.
“This woman was the victim of an assault but there is insufficient evidence to lead this to a murder or even manslaughter investigation at this time.
“Garda investigations are ongoing and further testing will be needed to determine if the attack was the cause of death,” a source told Independent.ie
Gardaí believe Ms Muckell was attacked by someone she knew and that a number of other people were present at the time.
Investigators conducted house-to-house searches and searched the area as part of the investigation.
They also conducted a technical investigation of the crime scene.
Ms Muckell had visited the Limerick City property in the days leading up to the attack and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
A Garda spokesman said they are appealing to anyone with information regarding any of these incidents to get in touch with them.
“In particular, Gardaí would like to speak to anyone who was in and observed activity in the Windmill Street area of Limerick City or the Cois Deel area of Rathkeale between Sunday 17 July 2022 and Tuesday 19 July 2022 that they have attracted attention to come forward.
“Anyone who may have camera footage (including dashcam and CCTV) of any of the areas between these dates is asked to provide such footage to Gardaí.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061 212400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station,” the spokesperson added.
