A generous boss has given all his employees £250 towards rising household bills amid soaring energy bills.

Alex Vickers, who has run Vickers Construction for almost 30 years, will help his 21 employees by giving them a £250 living allowance.

The 72-year-old said: “We can see things going up and we’re just trying to help them. It’s getting pretty serious. There are some single boys out there and I expect them to pass it along to their mom to the bills.”

The director said he noticed the impact the skyrocketing bills had had on his home and business. He said the construction company, based on Yarm Road in Stockton, has 12 vans so it is feeling the impact of rising fuel costs, he reports Teesside Live.

Alex who lives in n Orton, said: “The employees are like a big family, they have been with us for a long time. I help them wherever I can. I learned (how they feel) because I listened to them.

“Of course I feel the same way, I also have bills at home. It’s not a fortune, but I think it will help them a bit.”

Alex isn’t the only big-hearted gaffer in town to hand out cash to his workers.

Managing Director David Anderson gave all 58 Joseph Parr employees a £750 ‘Energy’ supplement this month. The Portrack-based builders’ merchant also gave the money to young apprentices who still live at home as gifts for their parents.

David, who also granted a pay raise for overinflation in January, hopes the payment will allay financial concerns. The 52-year-old said: “When you speak to individual staff, you’re afraid the fuel will go up – they put 60lbs in their tank and now it’s 80lbs.”

He said news of rising petrol and energy prices across the UK spurred him on to make the staffing decision.

David added: “We looked at this back in November/December when we were looking at raises and thought we needed to give people a decent raise this year because of inflation. Given the way things are, I thought it was a good idea to give them that little boost.”
