The government is asking sports federations to provide short-term shelters for Ukrainian refugees

The government has asked national sports federations if they can provide short-term emergency shelters for Ukrainian refugees.

This comes as the country is under significant pressure to accommodate refugees as some 3,500 Ukrainians are forced to leave their accommodation at universities as students are due to return to university in a month.

Sports facilities have already been used as short-term accommodation, as around 100 refugees resided at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin for a week before being moved to temporary accommodation a few days ago.

The Department for Sport said it has been in contact with the FAI, GAA, IRFU and Sport Ireland to seek their support in providing short-term emergency accommodation for people seeking humanitarian protection in Ireland.

A spokesman for the department said it did so on behalf of the Department for Children, Equality, Disability, Inclusion and Youth (DCEDIY).

“The organizations have responded positively to the request and any resulting accommodation offers have been the subject of direct cooperation by DCEDIY with the sports organisations,” they added.

There are currently over 43,000 Ukrainian refugees in Ireland and it is expected that there will be around 50,000 by mid-August.

The state provides housing for 76 percent of the new arrivals, most of whom live in shelters such as hotels, while the rest are housed in shelters and mortgaged shelters.
