It’s a bit like trying to fill the kettle with a strainer. Today’s 4% cut in the VAT rate on gas and electricity bills, aimed at helping to protect people from spiraling energy prices, will add €2 net per week to the average bill.

If €2 fell on the sofa cushions, many of us would not rush to find it. That is our impulse as we look at things now. But it’s a mindset that we seriously need to change—if not lose altogether.
