Emotional start for Janusz from Great British Bake Off
Entering the bake-off tent for the first time was an emotional experience for Janusz. He said: “The best memory I have of the first week was when I first went into the tent. When I realized I really would be a part of GBBO 2022.
“They warned us that every year one person cries when entering the tent. I joked with the group about making bets on who it would be, I just never expected it to be me!
“Being on GBBO was something I never thought I could achieve. It was my third try and actually it was my boyfriend who applied for me every year without my knowledge!
“The audition was so much fun and every year I got more determined to prove to myself that I could do it. When I got the call to confirm my spot this year, I was convinced I was being pranked!
“It was the biggest moment of my life so far and I was so proud of myself, but then I realized what was to come and I got to work!”
Bake Off Questions and Answers by Janusz
Q: Who or what has helped improve your baking over the years?
A: Over the years my friend Simon has been my biggest supporter. He pushed me to do things I doubted I could do and he had faith in me throughout the process!
Q: What kitchen utensil can you really not live without?
A: I would sacrifice my partner, friends and family before I would let anything happen to my blender!
Q: If you had to bake a cake of yourself in your proudest moment, what would it be and why and what kind of cake would it be?
A: I would make a cake representing May 1st, 2022. It was the day I left for GBBO and also the day we, well my partner, moved into our first property we bought together and two things were done mine Bucket list in one day!
“That would taste of success.”
Q: As a baker, what do you think are your strengths… and what are your weaknesses?
A: I think my greatest strength is flavor. I think I’m quite an intuitive baker and like to stray from recipes and see how far I can take things. My weakness is time management as I get distracted so easily!
Q: Are there any cakes or cookies that you dislike at all and what is your absolute favourite?
A: My favorite cookie is a gingernut! I love to eat and bake them and have perfected my own recipe which is very popular with my Polish and British families which makes them very special.
After twenty-five minutes of thought, I honestly don’t think there’s a cake or cookie in the world that I don’t like!
Q: If you’ve been staying at home a lot, what’s the craziest type of showstopper you can think of?
A: The craziest centerpiece I could imagine for my home would be an edible 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle inspired by a childhood angst. Mine would get on my parents’ elevator in Poland, which has no door.
Q: Given the prize of going up in a hot air balloon with a past baker, who would you choose and why?
A: I would choose Laura Adlington! I love what she has accomplished in the tent and continues to do as a baker and as a person. She seems like someone to light up any room and I feel like we’re part of the same soul, and it’s not just because she’s such a messy baker!
:: Great British Bake Off Season 13 begins Tuesday 13 September at 8pm on Channel 4.
