The great James Caan of American cinema has died at the age of 82

Movie actor James Caan has died aged 82, his family has announced.

On the American actor’s Twitter account, they wrote: “We are deeply saddened as we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6.

“The family appreciates the love and sincere condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Born in 1940 in New York, Caan has appeared in such films as The Godfather, Misery, Thief, Brian’s Song, Rollerball, Hide in Plain Sight, The Gambler, El Dorado and Funny Lady, and can be seen by a wide audience. He is best known for this role in Elf, in which he played the estranged father Buddy of Will Ferrell’s character.
