A police officer was beaten to death by colleagues during a simulated mob attack during training, his mother has claimed.
Houston Tipping, 32, died on May 26, three days after an off-duty accident at Elysian Park Academy in Los Angeles, California.
Houston acted as a bike instructor during practice. The scenario involved a scuffle with another officer, Los Angeles Police Department said after his death.
Police said: “Officer Tipping fell to the ground and sustained a catastrophic spinal cord injury.”
Shirley Huffman, Houston’s mother, has filed a lawsuit against the city.
She accuses wrongful death and civil rights violations Los Angeles Times reported.

She claims her son was “repeatedly hit in the head so badly it bled” and that he sustained multiple neck fractures, which caused his death
Other officers have previously been injured during this particular exercise, which the allegation calls into question the training.
Spokesman Captain Kelly Muniz told the newspaper that the department was investigating the incident internally to see if “there are any changes that need to be made.”
In a statement, LAPD Chief Michel Moore said: “The department is fully investigating the accident to determine if additional action can be taken to ensure such a tragedy is avoided in the future… We regret this tragic loss.”

“I’m proud of Officer Tipping’s fellow trainees who took immediate action in initiating CPR and other life saving efforts and the work of the LA Fire Department.
“I’m also Dr. Kenji Inaba and the incredible medical staff at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center for doing everything they could to save him.”
Houston had been with the department five years and worked as a patrolman in the San Fernando Valley.
His funeral was on the 22nd.
His father paid tribute to his son, saying, “My son Houston was kind by nature.
“He really cared about people. He had the perfect character to be an LAPD officer.”
The family set one up GoFundMe to support his girlfriend Britney after his death.
