The haunting close-up of an ant’s face is the stuff of nightmares in the Small World photo contest

IF you think this is a scene from a horror movie, think again.

What you see is a frighteningly close photo of a real ant’s face.

The shocking shot shows everything from skin imperfections to the hair on his chin.

It’s zoomed in so close that we don’t really see the creature’s eyes.

These red dots are part of the ant’s antennae, giving it a much more menacing appearance.

The picture was taken by Dr. Eugenijus Kavaliauskas and submitted to Nikon 2022 Small World Photo Contest.

His own website offers even more breathtaking snapshots of creepy crawlies.

It didn’t win, but was praised under the Images of Distinction.

That hasn’t stopped the photo from catching people’s attention online.

“Image from a horror movie? Nah,” commented one.

“This is the very real face of an ant. An ant. Now you have to think about it all night.”

“Oh come on!!! How am I going to sleep now,” said another.

“I’m sick,” admitted a third.

The winning image was a stunning shot of the fluorescent hand of a gecko – more specifically, a Madagascar giant day gecko.

Grigorii Timin, who took the hand photo, said: “This embryonic hand is about 3 mm (0.12 inch) long, which is a huge specimen for high-resolution microscopy.

“The scan consists of 300 tiles, each containing about 250 optical slices, resulting in more than two days of acquisition and about 200 GB of data.”
