The Home Office has warned Brits applying for a passport that the process could take longer than expected – and could impact those planning to holiday abroad in 2022

British plan public holidays overseas are being urged to check their passports and apply for an extension now before the summer, with waiting times currently at up to 10 weeks.

That home office has issued a warning for travelers from the UK as a backlog is expected following the impact of the Covid pandemic and travel restrictions that have prevented people from traveling abroad in recent years.

In fact, over five million people are estimated to have had their passport applications delayed in 2020 and 2021.

As a result, UK travelers waiting for passports could be left in the process for up to 10 weeks – and if you’ve booked a holiday you don’t want to risk being unable to start your trip because you left it too late.

Check the validity of your passport as this could prevent you from going on holiday

Abi Tierney, Director General of HM Passport Office said: “Now that international travel has resumed we know people want to go on holiday and yet many people are leaving too late to apply for a passport.

“The summer holidays are fast approaching. So if you need a new passport, we urge you to apply now.

“Our dedicated staff work tirelessly to ensure passport applications are processed as quickly as possible.”

There are some Premium and Fast Track services available for those who urgently need a passport, but these appointments are limited and in high demand.

Check a destination’s rules in both passports and Covid entry requirements to ensure you’re prepared for your holiday

You can find out more about the application process at It is cheapest to apply online, but you can also apply by posting a paper form to the post office for an additional £9.50.

When you go on vacation, it’s not just about whether your passport is valid for the dates of travel.

Most countries require your passport to be valid for at least three months after you return home, while others require at least six months validity.

If you have a holiday planned, it’s worth checking the rules for your destination well in advance – you can find this information in the UK Foreign Office’s travel advice for your chosen destination.

You also need to check your airline’s rules as different companies may have different rules.
