MESSAGING just got a lot easier on iPhone.
A number of handy new features were introduced this month with the release of iOS 16, the latest version of the iPhone operating system.
You need to download iOS 16 before trying any of them. Instructions on how to do this are at the bottom of the page.
Here are three things to try in the Messages app after the software update.
1) Edit a message
Not all iMessages can be optimized or deleted: there is a time limit.
You only have 15 minutes to make changes to a text before the option expires.
Just press and hold the message to edit it.
Recipients are notified when a text has been edited.
However, it’s not possible to see exactly what changes were made – unless you’ve seen the message before and remembered what it said.
Also important is that both the sender and recipient must be on iOS 16 for the feature to work.
So even if you have iOS 16, you can’t undo or edit a text for someone who hasn’t upgraded yet.
You’ll get a warning that some people won’t see your changes in this case.
All must be running iOS 16 for the feature to work.
Unfortunately, when you use WhatsApp, there is no way to edit a text.
However, WhatsApp regularly adds new features and is already testing a similar hack.
So you might not have to wait too long to edit WhatsApp texts as well.
3) Send back a message
You can undo an iMessage on iOS 16 within 15 minutes of sending it by pressing and holding the text.
But don’t think you can do this quietly.
Just like WhatsApp, if a text has “not been sent,” a note will appear for both the sender and the recipient.
This prevents any confusion once text has disappeared.
With WhatsApp it is a very similar process.
Just press and hold the message and select “Delete for everyone”.
This option will disappear after too much time has passed, so be quick.
3) Haptic tapping
Finally! It’s possible to get “haptic” feedback when typing on an iPhone keyboard.
That means you’ll feel tiny vibrations as you tap each character.
It’s a trick that’s been available on Android for years.
But the clever feature has finally come to iPhone with the latest iOS 16 update.
Go to Settings > Sound & Haptics, then turn on Haptics for your iPhone keyboard feedback.
What is iOS 16?
This is the core operating system that powers the device and Apple’s delivers appFeatures and Themes on your iPhone.
This year’s new version is called iOS 16 and it’s packed with new features iPhone Features Users Have Been Waiting For.
This includes a new lock screen with widgets, stylized portrait wallpapers and notifications that roll up from the bottom.
Messages is also getting a major update, allowing you to edit or retrieve recently sent messages, as well as recover recently deleted messages or mark conversations as unread.
How to get iOS 16
To try iOS 16 for yourself, you need to update your iPhone software.
Go to Settings > General > Software update.
You can then type Update to iOS 16 at the bottom of the screen and then Download and install.
On some iPhones you will be redirected Download and install automatically.
You’ll be prompted to enter your iPhone passcode (if you have one) and then agree to Apple’s terms of service.
The download and installation process takes up to an hour. So make sure you send all important messages before you start.
