A loud, piercing sound plays in the short clip, which has amassed more than 3 million views on TikTok.

The frequency of the sound increases over time, giving it the effect of gradually getting higher and louder.

As the frequency increases, a number on the screen spirals down from 88 to zero.

The influencer who posted the clip in May passes Justin Augustine and says the test can show “how old your hearing is”.

The number at which you stop hearing the sound is the “age” of your ears, which you can compare to your actual age.

The test is designed to determine whether you hear better than average or worse than average for a person your age.

As we age, our hearing deteriorates due to damage to the hair cells and nerves in the inner ear.

This means that over the years we lose the ability to hear higher frequency sounds.

The loss is more noticeable in people with hearing impairments, such as those who regularly listen to music that is too loud.

Hearing loss with age is relatively predictable, which allows for the creation of tests like the one shared to TikTok.

Sounds at 8,000 Hertz, for example, should be easily heard by anyone with normal hearing.

Sounds above 12,000 Hz are difficult for people over 50 to hear, while at 15,000 Hz those over 40 are lost.

At a frequency of 17,400 Hz, only young people can hear a tone. Most people over the age of 18 cannot hear this sound.

In comments under Agustin’s post, users compared their scores – with many expressing concerns about their ratings.

One commenter wrote: “After 27 deaths it’s silent.”

Another said: “Hope this isn’t serious…I’m 67…I’m 32.”

And a third mused anxiously: “Forty-six at 15…um, that’s probably not good news.”
