International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan will open an investigation into allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Mr. speak Monday evening.
“I have decided to conduct an investigation into the situation in Ukraine as quickly as possible,” Khan said in a statement on the court’s website.
The Chief Prosecutor of the ICC has alert Russia and Ukraine said on Friday that any act of genocide, war crimes or crimes against humanity could fall under the jurisdiction of the courts and therefore could be investigated by his office.
War crimes include intentional killing of civilians or prisoners of war, torture, sexual violence, and looting.
Opening the investigation is the next step in an existing investigation into hostilities in eastern Ukraine, whose preliminary investigation is conclude by the end of 2020. Khan said the investigation will include “an extension of the conflict in recent days,” meaning any additional evidence after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in Thursday.
Khan had not previously followed the preliminary poll, completed by predecessor Fatou Bensouda, quote “Limited capacity of the Office due to overuse of resources.”
Khan said he will be “calling for additional budget support, voluntary donations to support all of our situations, and free staffing loans.”
“The importance and urgency of our mission is too serious to be taken hostage for lack of means,” he said.
