HIDDEN in your iPhone settings is a list that shows the apps that can access your microphone.
There’s also a clever Apple alert that shows exactly when one of these apps activates your microphone – and listens to what you say.
If you’re a longtime iPhone fan, you probably have dozens of apps installed.
Some of these apps have requested access to your microphone over the years.
But you’ve probably lost track of who can access what — especially if you’re an iPhone power user.
To find out, go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
This will bring up a huge list of apps that have access to your microphone.
And it will also include apps that want to access your microphone but you haven’t enabled them.
You can turn microphone access on or off for individual apps at any time.
So if you’re worried about a specific app, you can disable microphone access in seconds.
If you only install popular and reputable apps, you probably don’t need to worry about microphone spying.
But there’s a handy way to see if an app is using your mic at any given time.
First, make sure you’re running iOS 14 or later – go to Settings > General > Software update to check.
Then, when using your iPhone, keep an eye on the top bar.
If you ever see an orange dot, it means the microphone has been activated.
By swiping into your control center, you can see details about which app is using the microphone.
On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
And on an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the top-right corner of the display.
If you suspect something is wrong, you should check the app’s permissions in Settings.
