The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) has revealed it is just two days away from the supply of universal blood and is “closer than ever” to declaring an amber alert.

BTS is importing a batch of blood from NHS Blood and Transplant to address the current shortage of blood supply due to donors not showing up for appointments.

Approximately 350 units of RhD negative, O negative, A negative and B negative blood group were collected from the UK yesterday.

IBTS CEO Paul McKinney asked for public support to help maintain the blood supply.

He said: “Raising the alert under Ireland’s national anemia scheme, could have a serious impact on patient care.

“The appointment-based system introduced at the beginning of the pandemic has helped us manage donor engagement and keep donors and staff at the clinic safe.”

“However, maintaining RhD-negative blood groups remains particularly challenging, and with only 2 days of negative blood group O reserves, IBTS is closer than ever to declaring an amber alert.”

Mr McKinney said the service was on the verge of an amber warning that would have a direct impact on hospital operations, particularly for planned surgeries.

“In recent weeks, about 20pc of our booked appointments have not shown up for donations. While we are incredibly grateful to all of our donors who have continued to support us throughout the pandemic, this has had a very real and consequential impact on our ability to collect blood and maintain resources. our blood supply,” he said.

“Over the past few weeks, we have continued to supply hospitals with more RhD negative blood than we can collect, so IBTS has made the decision to request a shipment of blood from the UK. UK to ensure a continuous supply on next week.”

He added: “We are calling for blood donors, and will donate blood next week. If you receive a text message from us, please respond at the number provided to book an appointment and once you have booked that appointment, commit to keeping it, we desperately need your support “.
